With Lian Qiao, for various Heat disorders.
With Lian Qiao and Huang Qin, for unremitting high fever.
Olibanum Ru Xiang 15g Invigorates the Blood, promotes the movement of Qi, reduces swelling and generates flesh.
Rx. et Rz. Rhei Da Huang 15g Drains Heat, purges accumulations, drains Fire, invigorates the Blood, dispels Blood Stasis, and reduces Fire toxicity.
Sm. Persicae Tao Ren 15g Breaks up Blood Stasis, invigorates Blood circulation and drains abscesses.
Flos Chrysanthemi Ju Hua 9g Disperses Wind, clears Heat, calms the Liver Yang and detoxifies.
With Bo He, for Wind-Heat patterns with fever, chills, headache, dizziness, sore eyes and sore throat and Liver Qi Stagnation turning to Liver Fire Flaring upward with blurred vision, dizziness, headache and red, swollen eyes.
Fr. Forsythiae Lian Qiao 6g Clears Heat, especially in the Upper Jiao, relieves toxicity, reduces abscesses and dissipates clumps.
With Jin Yin Hua, for initial stage Wind-Heat.
Rx. Trichosanthis Tian Hua Fen 6g Drains Heat, generates Fluids, clears and drains Lung Heat, transforms Phlegm, moistens Lung Dryness, relieves toxicity, expels pus and reduces swelling.
Rx. Paeoniae Alba Bai Shao 6g Nourishes Blood, softens the Liver, calms Liver Yang and Liver Wind and alleviates pain.

With Zhi Mu, for acute and chronic Lung Heat cough.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS

  • Epistaxis, usually a small amount of Blood (initial stage)
  • Nasal obstruction (early stage)
  • Tumor in the nose
  • Tinnitus
  • Deafness
  • Masses of the neck
  • Vernet's syndrome
  • Platoplegia
  • Asymmetry of the palate
  • Disappearance of the mouth opening
  • Migraines
  • Dysphagia
  • Choking sensation while drinking
  • Hoarseness
  • Exophthalmos
  • Blindness
  • Usually asymptomatic at the early stage
  • The tumor may appear as a cauliflower-like nodule or ulceration on the nasopharynx or as membrane erosion of abnormal color
  • If the tumor infiltrates to the submucosal layer, the surface of the membrane will be smooth and the nasopharynx will be depressed
  • Cranial nerve involvement is reflected by:
    Paralysis of the eyeball
    Facial hypothesia or hypoalgesia
    Difficulty opening the mouth
    Inclination of the tongue when it protrudes
    Aphasia
    Paralysis of the soft palate
    Disappearance of the gullet response
