POINT: SJ-3 (SAN JIAO-3)

  • With the hand lying prone, this point can be found between the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones, in the hollow behind the metacarpophalangeal joints.
  • When the fist is clenched, the point is on the dorsum of the hand between the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones, in the depression proximal to the fourth metacarpophalangeal joint.
  • With the palm facing downward, the point is located on the back of the hand between the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones, in the depression proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joint.
    Note: this point may be located at the apex of the equilateral triangle formed by this point and the prominences of the metacarpophalangeal joints of the ring and little fingers.
  • Straight insertion, or slanted toward the wrist, 1 to 1.5 cun. Sensation: local distention and soreness, sometimes extending to the fingertips or forearm, or an electric, numb sensation reaching the fingertips.
  • Puncture perpendicularly 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
  • Moxibustion is applicable.
  • Perpendicular or oblique insertion directed proximally, 0.5 to 1 cun.
